Ancestral Lineage Healing is something I’ve been doing for myself and my family for many years. I have explored many different energy healing and alternative modalities to accomplish this important work and continue to study with new teachers every year.

healing family patterns by ariann thomas

Healing Family Patterns is a great book for those just getting started with ancestral lineage healing. I have read so many books on this topic and studied with various teachers and understand this can be a complex topic. It can easily overwhelm those who want to learn more but are not sure where to start.

In this book Ariann gives an easy to understand explanation of Quantum Physics and family history. She explains how we can heal ourselves by journeying into the past through meditation and other means.

Her scientific information is backed up by client stories which illustrate various ancestral lineage issues, the origin of them, and how to return to the CHOICE POINT and choose something else that will benefit the entire lineage.

I found this book a quick read but full of a lot of great questions to ask yourself as your do genealogical or military research or are ready to dive into ancestral lineage healing.

For those familiar with ThetaHealing and other energy healing modalities, you may find some of the techniques described can also be found in other modalities. That is one big reason to study so many possibilities. You may resonate more with one modality for a time and then need something different. Yet, from my experience, the basics are pretty much the same no matter what system you use.

What Do You Think?

What do you think about these topics? Have you explored them within your own family history? How have you been able to move beyond and heal the trauma of the past?

There is an incredible book The Survivors. A Story of War, Inheritance, and Healing by Adam P. Frankel. I picked this book up to attempt to find another book I could use in my master class on war, inherited trauma, and healing. This book gave me a completely different view of healing than to others I’ve read.

Whether you are from a family of Holocaust Survivors or not, the themes in this book speak to many of us. As Frankel tells his story we learn about identity, family secrets, family patterns, loyalty, grief & loss, survival, sexual secrets, mental illness, PTSD, shame, anger, familial behavior, and so many other themes associated with war, survival, the physical manifestations of keeping secrets, inherited trauma, and how we each have to choose our own path regardless of our family’s choices. We also learn how his Jewish family, who survived the Holocaust, felt about loyalty and looking the other way on family secrets.

If you were to look at my copy of this book, you would see underlining on many pages. Notes written in the margins, and a lot of questions or correlations I make to my own family. I think any good book makes us think and helps us to see where we are not alone in whatever we are going through and if we are lucky – just how much we have changed and healed ourselves.

By the end of the this book I could see some of myself in Frankel – his experience, how he dealt (and didn’t) with the family secret he learned about himself, and in the end how he began healing. Honestly, I was in tears.

I will spend some time journaling on what I read and going back through the book to see all the passages I marked as important.

Have you read this book? What was your reaction? Do you have another similar book you can recommend I read?

Family patterns and secrets, the known and unknown, can really create chaos in our lives when not explored, acknowledged and healed. Family Constellations is one way to work with family patterns and explore the past.

Family Constellations is a system created by the late Bert Hellinger to help individuals and families see the known and unknown in a family system (constellation) and work to heal and release those patterns. This is important because we all, consciously or unconsciously, are living pieces of our parents, siblings, or ancestors’ lives, usually in ways that mess us up and keep us stuck.

I learned about Family Constellations several years ago but only in the last year have I really begun to dig into the depths of it. After reading a few books on the subject, I discovered Nikki MacKay, an author, family constellator, and therapist in the U.K. who specializes in this and writes about it in a way anyone can use it. Her methods of explaining how to do a constellation alone or with a group opened up many doors for me.

Nikki’s book Between the Lines. Healing the Individual and Ancestral Soul with Family Constellation is a great starter guide for those like me, who need their hand held a bit more to fully understand this process.

I recently received another one of her books that was published later (more on that in a different article). I think she took sections of her first book and greatly expanded it for the next. I like this approach because it gives people greater choice on how to proceed.

In Between the Lines, Nikki takes us on a journey through Family Constellations and explains in just over 100 pages how to start working with it, the benefits, what entangles us with our ancestors, and possible outcomes. She also explains how some of the entanglements between us and a family member(s) can create continued destructive or negative living patterns in our lives.

For example, through some prior family patterns work and several tools in addition to Nikki’s book, I realized I am living out and standing in for entanglements and issues for my Grandpa Joe and Grandma Libbie. Several things about their lives and the war have affected me. Only I didn’t realize it until last year. There are many similarities between how they lived and patterns I unconsciously recreated in my life and one particular relationship.

When I first realized this late last year it FREAKED ME OUT!  I was angry, scared, happy, uncertain, and many other emotions. To be honest, I’d spent the last 6-7 years focused on my maternal line and the healing I knew I had to do for me and that side. I was ignoring – consciously my paternal side out of fear and other things I couldn’t name until last September when Libbie showed up and gave me some big awareness. Then I started looking more and healing my issues that also come down the ancestral lines from them and even before them.

Reading Nikki’s two books has given me even more tools to use to explore the entanglements and release them. To step into the more authentic ME as I work through the past. To stop repeating relationship patterns and negative things that only mess up my life and joy and really – to some extent my intimate relationship.

So what’s next? Well I plan to finish her other book I bought. Waiting on a third to arrive that she wrote. I will be incorporating her techniques into my personal healing and meditation and journaling sessions. I will also be teaching a little of this in my new Ancestral Souls Healing Circle Membership program I’m launching soon. Penny Walters has written an amazing book every genealogy and military research should read. It’s called Ethical Dilemmas in Genealogy by Penny Walters.

Why is this book important?

Penny outlines many potential ethical dilemmas faced by genealogy and military researchers. A few include: How do we handle things like secrets uncovered? Knowledge of a DNA match to someone the family didn’t know existed? How does a professional provide potentially emotionally damaging information to a client – or do they? Do you celebrate when you find a criminal in your family? These are only the tip of the iceberg.

How do we handle these things? Penny’s book shows us how through numerous examples and case studies. Her book covers:

  • What are ethical dilemmas?
  • Ethical dilemmas in genealogy.
  • DNA Testing
  • Adoption
  • Ethnicity and Identity
  • Potted History & Potential Future of Genealogy

Why did I want to read this book?

As a 20+ year genealogist and 10+ year military research professional, I purchased Penny’s book to explore the deeper layers of this work I do, that most of us do, that people are not as willing to discuss. As I move more into energy healing, ancestral lineage healing and helping families explore family patterns and go deeper than names, dates, places, battles, etc., Penny’s book shed light on areas in which I have not worked or needed to consider, like Adoption.

Now working with adoptees through private facilitation sessions, I have more tools in my toolbox to help them navigate their journey. I have more questions to ask as they write their stories and explore their personal truths. The remainder of Penny’s book also provides a lot of questions we can ask ourselves or our clients. Broader questions I think that should be discussed in the larger genealogy community also – something many are afraid to do because of taboo subjects and worries about offending someone. I think if we set those things aside and open up to these important questions, we can change and heal so much in our families and histories and the world.

Penny’s book is one I will be recommending to my clients and using further in my many projects, classes, webinars, and research work.
